Red: My northern Cardinal

A tender story to help kids feel seen, heard, and comforted when a sibling is sick.

About the Story

Red - spanish (8.5 x 8.5 in) (1).png

Red is a tender, deeply personal story about a little girl named Dani and her unexpected friend, a bright red cardinal called Red.

When Dani’s world is shaken by her sibling’s illness, Red appears—not to fix the hurt, but to stand beside her. Through gentle companionship, quiet understanding, and tender reminders that every feeling is welcome, Red helps Dani make sense of emotions too big to name—especially the quiet weight children sometimes carry when someone they love is hurting, and it isn’t them.

This tale never turns away from sadness, anger, or confusion. Instead, it opens a safe space for them all—showing kids that strength isn’t pretending everything is fine, and that even in the hardest moments, they are still allowed to laugh, play, and simply be children.

More Than a Book—A Support Tool

When a child’s sibling is diagnosed with cancer, their world quietly shifts. Often, they become the ones who wait, who watch, who stay strong—not because they don’t feel, but because they don’t know if they’re allowed to. Red was created for them.

Born from real experience, this book gives voice to the silent struggles of siblings—offering them a safe, gentle place to feel seen, heard, and understood. It’s not just a story; it’s a tool for healing.

Inside, children will find:

Emotional validation

reassuring them that every feeling—sadness, anger, joy, guilt—is real, acceptable, and never too much.

Resilience

showing that even in the darkest moments, they can move forward without needing to be “strong” all the time

Empathy

helping them understand their own pain and recognize it in others, without pressure to fix what they cannot.

Permission to be a child

reminding them that joy, play, and imagination are not canceled by illness. They are needed more than ever.

A Hug in Story Form

This book is for little kids—and big kids, too—who need to feel understood and seen. It’s for siblings sitting quietly outside hospital doors, for those who don’t want to add one more worry to their parents’ hearts, and for anyone carrying feelings that feel too much. Red is a gentle hug in the form of a story—a small bird on your hand, whispering: “You’re not alone.”
